This is a condition in which the tear glands are unable to provide adequate moisture to the eye. Read all about the condition called "Dry Eye" on Veterinary Vision Website

Dry Eye usually affects both eyes, is often chronic, requiring management for the duration of the dog's life to prevent discomfort and loss of vision associated with scarring of the surface of the eye. Fortunately, most animals respond well to medical therapy, designed to stimulate the tear glands to produce more tears.

One very effective, over the counter and inexpensive product used to care for your pets eyes is PURALUBE.

Q. What is Puralube?
A. Puralube is a lubricating ophthalmic ointment designed to soothe irritation and discomfort that occurs with dry eyes.

Q. What is this product used for?
Lubricating Ophthalmic Ointment is used to prevent further irritation and to relieve dryness of the eye. It affords temporary relief and helps the eyes feel moist and refreshed.

Q. What drug interations or side effects are possible with this product?
A. There have been NO drug interactions or side-effects reported for ophthalmic ointments.

Q. What are the active ingredients in this product?
A. White petrolatum, mineral oil and lanolin.

Q. How should this product be used?
A. Gently pull down the lower lid of the affected eye and apply a small amount of ointment to the inside of the eyelid. When the dog blinks, it spreads the ointment over the entire eye. Since this is very soothing and gives immediate comfort to the eye, dogs do not resist this ointment being put in their eyes - in fact they like it very much!

Q. What special precautions are there?
A. If the condition persists or increases discontinue use and consult your veterinarian. Keep the ointment tightly closed. To avoid contamination of the product, do not allow the tip of the ointment's tube to touch any surface. Replace cap after each use.

Q. How should I store this product?
A. Store Puralube ointment at room temperature. Keep the tube tightly closed.

Q. Once I see good results, should I continue to use the Puralube?
A. Yes! Charlies are a breed described as wall eyed. It is very common for them to suffer occasionally or on an on-going basis from dry eye. You may notice a discharge or crustiness around the lids or at the corners of the eye. This should be removed by gently washing the dog's eyes each day, and using a lubricating ophthalmic ointment such as Puralube. If the condition worsens see your Vet. However, for most Charlies, use of the lubricating ointment can provide the stimulus for their own increased tear production and it will also soothe and protect their eyes.

Q. Can Puralube be effective with pets of any age or with other health concerns?
A. Yes! This product will not interfere with any other medication, and is safe to use on young and older pets. In fact, your older Charlie will get great benefit and comfort from this ointment.
