English Toy Spaniel Daphne2
Homecoming for "Davis," December 2004!
In early September '04, we were contacted by Diana for advice on the behavior
of a 1yr old, pure black, English Toy Spaniel that she had
recently gotten after seeing him advertised on a
"for sale email list"!.
Though we didn't know it then, this was the beginning of little Davis'
journey to his new forever home -- many emails went back and forth, and
it soon became apparent that much of what Davis exhibited was really just
"normal" Charlie behavior...except for his anxiety barking when left
alone --
even for few minutes. This was not surprising after we learned
that Diana was his 3rd home in 1 year! The breeder 'gave' him to a
co-worker (we have never identified the breeder); she kept him for
over 6 months but often left him alone in the house -- then she put him
up for sale -- and luckily Diana got him! She came to our Specialty Show in
October '04 with Davis who is a very outgoing, happy, affectionate
little guy!
Judge Alicia Pennington looked carefully at him and her opinion was that he
definitely is an ETS! She said that the all black color comes from years of
breeding B&T to B&T (he does have white on his chest)! But he's got the
beautiful round apple head and long luxurious ears (the 2nd home cut
off all his hair). Soon it became clear that her own health problems
wouldn't allow Diana to keep him, and (thankfully) she asked us to find him a
permanent home that would love him always. Davis' turn of luck began when
Diana 'bought' him from the email for sale list and then
looked for Charlie people like us to find the right home for him!
Diana gave him to us at the San Mateo Show on Thanksgiving weekend -- he
came home with me and my good friend Robert; who since he's self-employed
could have him at his home while I was at work. (Rob is long time Charlie
man and has 1 little girl Althea). Davis immediately went to the vet
for a total going over, got microchipped, meds for some allergy problem,
and we had him neutered.
The Vet fell in love with him too -- she did find one knee
was "loose," but hoping it won't amount to anything...he's very
irresistible and I was tempted to violate the condo law and try to keep 3
dogs - but I realized Davis deserved his OWN family! This boy was in no way
'damaged goods' but we were his 4th stop in 12 mos! Not good!
He got along great with my girls -- though Goldie was somewhat timid, but
Francesca, at 1/2 his size, let him know she was in charge! All 3 of
them slept on the bed happily.
It turns out that Rob had a friend whose parents retired to a Blueberry
Farm in Oregon - they'd been on a list for a rescue Cavalier for over a
year and were thrilled when she told them about Davis! I talked on the phone
a few times telling them about his anxiety (barking or whining if
alone in car or at home) -- as an aside, I do think with being secure he
will get out of this.
"Blueberry Bob" (his nickname) kept assuring me that he's owned dogs for
over 35 years and since they are retired they are home all the time --
little Davis will never be alone!
On December 6th Davis was picked up in San Francisco. We met at
The Bow Wow Meow Pet Shoppe, owned by a friend of Robert's.
"Blueberry Bob" and his wife drove 5 hrs from Oregon,
in rainy weather because Bob was so excited and anxious to get his
little boy home. Bob signed the Adoption Contract that stated he MUST
return Davis to me if for ANY reason he cannot keep him -- Bob
said the only reason would be if they didn't wake
up in the morning! His daughter is going to live on the Farm in
January. I've talked to them since they got home with Davis and things sound
very good! They have all his medical records from my Vet,
breed information that I put into a little notebook for them, and
a copy of Birchall's small reference book! Bob reports that
Davis loves to sit under his desk and goes everywhere with him!
Bob said he's never been escorted to the bathroom before but it's fine
with him!! They also go to visit the retirement home where his Mom is -
which makes little Davis a Therapy Dog! He's perfectly suited to it!
A huge ThankYou to the participants who make the Rescue Wall Calendar
possible by contributing enormously in "buying" their pages and also
buying many copies of the calendar, and ThankYou to those who every
year are
faithful to buy a calendar and donate to this small rescue effort -
because of their support we had a fund available for Davis, for his Vet bills
and surgery!
Each of you were a part of giving Davis his loving forever home
and the beautiful
work of art that is the Charlie Celebration Calendar!
